Shelton Festival

"Shelton Festival" is one of the traditional festivals with a long history in Tibet. Shelton is a Tibetan translator, meaning "yogurt feast", so Shelton Festival was interpreted as a festival for drinking yogurt. Later, it gradually evolved into the performance of Tibetan opera, also known as the "Tibetan Opera Festival". The traditional Snowdon Festival takes the exhibition of Buddha as the prelude, so it is also called the "Buddha Festival". At the same time, there are wonderful yak racing and equestrian performances.

Origin of the festival:

According to the regulations of the Gelug Sect (Yellow Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism, the ban period is from June 15 to July 30 of the Tibetan calendar every year. Lamas of large and small temples are not allowed to go out to avoid trampling on insects. They can only go down the mountain after the ban is lifted on July 30. When the lama went down the mountain, the farmers and herdsmen took out yogurt to offer, forming the Shelton Festival. From the second half of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century, the emperors of the Qing Dynasty canonized the fifth Dalai Lama, Awang Luosang Gyatso, and the fifth Panchen Lama, Luosang Yixi, and gave them gold books and gold seals. Since then, Tibet's "political and religious integration" system has been further consolidated. At this time, the Shoton Festival began to perform Tibetan opera. The Dalai Lama moved to Norbulingka from the Potala official, and the Tibetan opera troupe came to Norbulingka to sing during the Snowdon Festival.

Way to celebrate:

At that time, residents near Lhasa, dressed in bright festive costumes, support the old and the young, carry butter buckets, and bring butter tea to the Lobrinka in the shade of the luxuriant trees to set up a colorful curtain. On the green of flowers, fragrant grass and manure, spread new card mats, carpets, fruit and delicacies, sit on the floor, drink and talk, sing and dance, watch Tibetan opera, and enjoy the joy of the festival. In the afternoon, each family began to string curtains as guests. The host toasted the guests with three toasts to the "Songzhun Nie Tower" (wine ceremony) and sang various songs of different tunes.
